PERSONALITY: To be honest, Ryu isn't someone you can get along too well with. He's abrasive, loud, and obnoxious - and says absolutely whatever he wants to say. He's also sneaky and a smooth kind of conman. But, if you manage to get past that, Ryu has a very old and wise soul that uses this 'live in the moment' philosophy due to personal experience that life doesn't last.
He hates people who don't stand up for themselves or the ones they want to protect, and especially can't stand to see a man (no matter how young), hide behind someone instead of facing a challenge head on. Other than that, Ryu is rather dumb and impatient, and can't handle having a normal job. He would much rather con money out of rich people who don't need it (he figures that's earning enough). Although he's decidedly on the wrong side of the law, he very rarely stoops to hurting others unless he's protecting someone or needs to do so in self-defense.
FEARS: Deep relationships, being alone or ignored, being a failure.

NOTES: So, needless to say, Ryu wasn't exactly thrilled when he found out what type of Pokemon his companion was. He was ready to completely abandon poor Hiro-chan, but luckily the Feebas' Bold, brash nature impressed the teen (especially when that determination won him a battle against a Dratini) and Ryu decided to give it a go. They've been inseparable ever since, so no dissing the fish when Ryu's around!

OTHER INFORMATION: Ryu had a bit of a hard life. His father died a few years after he was born, leaving his mother to take care of both him and his younger sister Riko. When Ryu was 8 and Riko 5, their mother had a nervous breakdown and left them. Ryu tried to find a job, but the only jobs that anyone was willing to give to an 8 year old were on the bad side of town, and not quite legal. After that didn't work out, Ryu decided (unbeknown to his sister) to begin stealing from the nobles and middle-class in order to take care of his sister who suffered from lung disease. This went well for about 2 years, until he managed to steal from the wrong person. He was beaten up a bit (not without a fight), but that wasn't the end of it - by the time he made his way back to his small shack of a house, it was already on fire, and he never saw his sister again.
It was only a few weeks after this incident that Ryu met his Pokemon companion. He'd assumed that he just didn't get one, or that it had died or something equally ironic (since his sister had already had her companion), but it was really just due to circumstances: Ryuu was born on land, and Hiro was born under water. They met while Ryu was sulking in an old cavern with a river flowing through it. At first Ryu was completely against the idea, and wanted to just leave the fish Pokemon where it swam, but Hiro would have none of it. When a wild Dratini from that very river suddenly attacked, and Hiro's determined fighting (even knowing just tackle), the Feebas earned Ryu's respect. Since then they've always been together (he carries Hiro in either a small tank in his backpack, or in a larger tank on wheels). His companionship with Hiro has helped him come to terms with his sister's death and learn to be himself.
Extra: The best scam they pull together is the old Feebas are Very Rare, trick. "But once you get one they're a gold-mine, each Feebas can lay up to 200 eggs, which turn into 200 Feebas who lay 200 eggs... and this is the bargain price - think about selling 200 of these babies at full retail to restaurants, enthusiasts, collectors, whoever!" (not mentioning that Hiro is a male Feebas and that they are a very common Pokemon). And then steal him back as soon as Hiro's alone again.
